As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday today, be sure not to misunderstand what is happening. This is not the first time that we hear about the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit first appears in the second verse of the Bible, instrumental in the creation of the world. The Holy Spirit has always worked through His Word to create faith, even in the Old Testament believers. In fact, without the Holy Spirit, no one would have had faith in the Old Testament times! In addition, frequently the Holy Spirit is mentioned as working in the great stories of the Old Testament; and of course, He inspired all of the prophets and writers of the Old Testament. The Holy Spirit has always existed and has continually been working in the lives of God’s people.
Pentecost Sunday is a special event where Jesus, who is at the right hand of God the Father in Heaven, sends the Holy Spirit to the Holy Christian Church. The Holy Spirit will drive the Apostles and the Church to preach the gospel of Christ to all nations. The New Testament era is here; the work of salvation is complete with Christ’s death and resurrection, and now the Holy Spirit is given to the Church in a dramatic way so that disciples are made as the Gospel is preached to all nations.
The Holy Spirit has been given to you as well; so today let’s think through Who the Holy Spirit is and what He does in your life.
Today as we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, and we thank God for giving the Holy Spirit to us. The Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity, and He is always with you and at work in your life, so that you can live as a disciple of Jesus Christ! Amen!
